Bone gap book cover

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby was not what I expected it to be, in all the best ways.  I’ll try very hard to not spoil it, but, you really should try this one out if you like mysteries, realistic fiction, overcoming difficult family issues and health problems, romance, or mythology.  This book is a little bit of everything!

Stefon meme

Finn’s dad died when Finn was 6 years old, and his mom moved away to be with her new boyfriend, leaving Finn with his older brother, Sean.  Everyone in the small town of Bone Gap knows everything about everyone else, but they didn’t realize that Finn’s spacey behavior is because he is face-blind.  His brain doesn’t process faces, so he identifies people by the way they move, or their hair, or voice. Everything is fine until his brother’s fiancée, Roza, goes missing.  Everyone assumes she just left, but Finn saw her being forced into a big black SUV, but because he can’t describe the kidnapper, the town just thinks he made it up.

The book spends most of its time with Finn, but every few chapters we find out about Roza’s childhood in Poland, and how she came to Bone Gap.  We also are they as she continues to try to save herself, she may be a princess in a tower, but she’s not going to wait for her prince to come save her.

While this book is very weighted in the real-world, there are bits of fairy tales and myths in there, too.  The kidnapper is a little like the Beast, trying to make Roza fall in love with him, or a little like Hades, trying to keep Persephone in the underworld.

Everything ties up nicely in the end.  You should read it to find out how.
